I'm afraid that it all does point to a headgasket.
in the water,air locks causing cold heaters and hot running are sure signs that the head gasket could be gone.The headgasket is not too difficult on one of these,it just depends what mechanical experience/ability you have.I would get some quotes from Garages first and go from there.
