Unusually, the 'D' stands for direct rather than diesel. Mitsubishi beat them to it with their GDi (as used in the Carisma) but Renault's IDE was the first direct injection petrol engine from a mainstream European manufacturer. The fuel is squirted straight into each cylinder, as opposed to into the intake manifold. This supposedly results in both better performance and economy, but is a bit of a nightmare to control properly from the ECU 's point of view.

Apparently the 2.0 IDE started out life in the Megane Coupe before finding its way into the 2.0 Laguna II. In the Laguna, it was replaced with the slightly less powerful 2.0 VVT engine in mid 2002 due to the reliability problems that Webcode mentioned.

Having had one, I can say that the IDE is a great engine when it's running right. It's surprisingly torquey for a 16v petrol engine, so while it doesn't need to be thrashed hard for decent performance, it can handle a good thrashing too when you really want the most of it. In that respect, it's like having your cake and eating it. It's a shame about the reliability issues, because if it was actually good for the 100K+ you'd expect out of a modern petrol engine, it'd be an excellent buy. As it is, they often need serious work or even replacement at around half that mileage.
