Try explaining that to monsieur plod. For the sake of a few quid spent now its a lot less than risking a fine if you do get stopped by the police. It is not just night driving, how about driving in poor weather/reduced visibility.
That said I have taken our car abroad 4 times in the last 2 yrs and never once came across any plods.
