Good to hear VOSA is taking an interest - may help to push Renault along a bit. As for insurance companies, they are a law unto themselves - good luck on that one!!
As Glenda points out, if Renault Service are unaware of problems (although that is possibly a standard response to these type of questions) may be encouraging that it may be isolated to a few cases, but even a few is too many.
Making the door mirrors only live with the ignition will not help stop a fire happening, only make sure it happens when the ignition is on.
fireball scenic - did you have any problems with the mirrors before the fire - ie judders when moving, or would not stop moving once adjusted and let go of the joystick?
