Brushless motors DO work on DC, or to put it correctly, there are brushless DC motors. I.E. the ones in your computer fans. They work by a small inverter providing AC to the
(stator) the rotor being a magnet. Speed is controlled by varying the frequency of the inverter.
In an EPB application one NEEDS high torque & therefore the high current which can ONLY be achieved from a Series wound (like a car Starter) motor.
The torque from a small brushless is only sufficient to drive a fan.

In your situation, I would be looking for model racing car motors for replacement brush kits. I would also try to identify the maker.
