These things can develop very quickly and can be difficult to detect until it's too late. Fires are an alarming end to an electrical short, which should have been caught by the fuse in the fusebox.
I'm not surprised the mirrors were going mad while the fire was going - from the pictures, the wires melted just below the switch and joined together in the heat. What I am surprised about is the fuse sounds like it did not pop.
I don't think the mirrors are the problem, possibly not even the switch, although cannot be totally eliminated, but I think the problem could be wiring rubbing within the door. These are my opinions based on the pictures in your original post, and nothing beats actually getting your hands on the bits to make a proper call.
Be interesting to hear Reanult's and VOSA's comments.
