The battery's usually hidden these days, so the first thing you have to do is find it and uncover it.

Once you've done that, it's simply a case of unbolting the terminals. If you're just disconnecting to work on the car (rather than removing) I'd only unbolt the negative lead and then tuck it away so that there's no way it can spring back and touch the negative terminal of the battery.

Having said that, I've fitted a number of car stereos and have never bothered disconnecting the car battery. Yes, I've briefly shorted things before now, but the worst that's ever done is blown a fuse. If you're just plugging in a new stereo that already has an ISO connector on the back (rather than doing the wiring for yourself) then there's practically zero chance of you shorting anything out anyway.
