It has taken me some time to get over the fact that my Renault Espace (new shape 04 reg) not only caught fire, but did so with my three children and I in the car. we got out fine but the car was a complete write off. £16000 worth of damage on a car valued at £6500.
I wanted to share this experience with other Espace owners and offer a word of caution. My car was a dream to own and drive, it was hard to watch it reduced to little more than a pile of slag metal in a Sanisbury's car park.
It ran fine until it lost clutch power; the hydraulic line had split at one of the junctions, right at the back of the engine bay. A simple enough fix except that on the newer models the replacement part came in several sections. It was meant to be put into the car a piece at a time, however the idiot mechanic seems to have decided to put it together and then force it into the car, thus splitting part of the wiring loom and causing it to short, start a fire and burn to the ground less than two hours after collecting it from said mechanic.
the great bit is as follows: i have always had comprehensive car insurance WITH legal cover. In 18 years of driving i had never made a claim but............... when i tried to get the garage (the place the RAC recommended and took my car to) to even consider that they might be at fault i failed. the damage to the car was so extensive that it could not be proved, the insurers didn't want to know the legal team didn't want to know and the garage couldn't give a damn.
the long and short of it is as follows, if you have a problem with your clutch hydraulics take it to a Renault specialist, or someone who actually knows what they are doing.
i also have two Espace rear "isofix" seats (beige) sitting in dry storage inh my garage and taking up space, we took them out as soon as we bought the car. i thought of shoving them on
but figured this would be more suitable.
and now i come to the end of my tale of woe, what am i driving now? well after being screwed over by the garage, the insurers and the HP company (who charged me an "option to buy" fee my wife and i bought a Citroen Picasso with what was left of the insurance settlement. I HATE IT but i don't owe a penny on it.
