megane 97 engine seized

Hi guys I'm new to this forum so please be patient with me.
The problem is this:- I bought a 1997 Megane 3 weeks ago and had a problem with the engine chugging. Changed plugs and leads and it ran fine until yesterday when it chugged again then cut out.
When i tried to start it up again i was just getting a click like with a jammed starter. Had it looked at by local mechaninic and was told the engine has seized and therefore needs a new engine.
Could anyone clarify if indeed a new engine is req. or can it be repaired, and if it does need a new one any idea how much it will cost for a salvage.
I do have a Renault 19 1.4 (same size engine) on an M reg, could this poss be fitted.
Thanks guys.

hi and welcome to the forum
i'm sure one of our more technical bods will give you a definitive answer, but if it has seized it'll be cheaper to replace than repair. i had the same thing years ago and bought a recon engine for about 300 and fitted it myself.

unlucky about your car, but i'm sure it can be sorted

Not much more i can say really. Engine won,t turn over just getting a click. Put car in 4th and tried to move back and forth and no sign of any belt movement at all.
That's about all i can say really, but if anyone could say whether or not the 1.4 from the renault 19 would fit I would be very grateful. Thanx.

To check if the engines are in anyway similar, you need to check the engine numbers of each. The numbers should be stamped on the front of the engine block.

The numbers for the Megane should either be E7J 624 or E7J 764.
The numbers on the 19 could be one of many, but if it starts with the E7J part, you could be in luck. The block and head should be the same, but the ancillaries(manifolds, alternator etc) will need to swapped over from the Megane.

If the engine is seized in the Megane, then theres no point in repairing it as the cost would be prohibitive. If the 19 engine doesn't fit, then one from a breakers would be £250 to £350 depending on mileage and amount of warranty given.

The best way to check to see if an engine is seized is to try and turn the crank shaft pulley bolt clockwise with a spanner(with the car out of gear).Seized engines are very uncommon, but the cambelt could have snapped on your Megane giving the impression that it is seized, but even if it is just the belt gone, then repair is still expensive....

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
