Unhappy Snapped Timing Belt 94 Espace Diesel

I just bought a 94 m 2.1 helios drove 46 miles and engine just cut out i coasted but could not start
i was told cam belt snapped.
aa relayed home
one garage thinks i may get away with a new belt and a few rockers replaced 300
but i could be facing valve damage and its got loads of them
that needs torquing down in sequence (massive job)

what are the chances of me getting away with cheaper option has anyone had any experience of this problem

please help my hire car goes back in a few days
and i dont want a bill for work that hasnt been done
i want to sound knowledgeable so i dont get ripped off

I strongly suspect that some,if not all the valves would have been depends on the engine speed when the belt broke and how lucky you are!.

It is expensive to repair the damage done when a belt breaks,so it might be worth getting a few quotes for a fully reconditioned complete head for your engine.From there,work out which is going to be cheaper,repairing your head or getting another one.If this is the same engine as was fitted into the Laguna 1,then there are 12 valves,and I suspect they would be £20-£30 each to replace,plus the head gasket set,bolts,belt and other bits and pieces.The labour is going to be expensive,also.The book time to remove and refit the head alone is 10hours......

You could try a new belt on it as it is,but I suspect you'd be wasting your money.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
