Grinding noise on full lock and squeaky brakes

I have a 53 plate Clio Mk II - it has only done 35000 miles but I have noticed that when it is on full right lock when steering there is a sort of grinding noise that comes from seemingly the steering shaft? Is this serious and what will it cost to repair. Also the Clio has squeaky brakes all the time - not intermittently - is this something connected or to worry about?

Any advice gratefully received.
The car was last MOT'd in Nov 2010 which is when I purchased it. I noticed the grinding straight away.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Grinding noise on full lock and squeaky brakes

Noises on full lock are quite often down to worn outer CV joints. Can you look under the car and see if the rubber gaiter that protects the joint and keeps the grease in is still intact / still mounted properly.

Squeaky brakes can be usually sorted out by cleaning the brakes and making sure the pads are not really tight in the callipers and free to move. Might mean wire brushing and filing off any rust where the brake pad metal backings contact the callipers and use copper grease on moving parts but not on the braking surfaces.
