Car has two registration numbers????

A friend of mne has just purchased a new car, and checking through the history the vehicle was registered in 2002 on plate xx02 tyr to it's first owner, who having owned it for one year moved it onto a garage. bill of sale from this garage has a different number plate NOT A PRIVATE PLATE xx02 ghf. Is there a reason for this?? current plate is xx02 ghf which matches v5, info dvla hold, and is linked to the chassis number. DVLA mentioned xx02 tyr is linked to the car but will not detail any further.........any experienced answer please?? cannot think of any legitimate reason to adjust a standard plate. thanks for advice

Re: Car has two registration numbers????

Just because a plate is in the normal format doesn't mean it can't be transferred about - some people use normal format reg numbers as private ones as they may still contain initials or whatever personal symbolism is required.

Re: Car has two registration numbers????

Although a bit naff, 'ghf' if personal to you could be a cheap private plate.
I guess thats why there was a plate change.
If your friend is concerned he could do an hpi check if not done already, but if he's already purchased it then i guess the horse has bolted and the stable door can stay open.
