Re: Motorway Madness - A Rant

I wholly concur with everything you have ranted pal

Motorway driving should be a pleasure and get you from a-b quickly and efficiently! It is the minority of drivers which make it an impossibility to do this because of their ignorance or sheer foolishness!

One thing you didn't mention is lane hoggers! You have three lanes, they are not the slow lane, medium lane and fast lane like many seem to think they are! Every driver should be in the inside lane until they need to pass a vehicle going slower than them....that's the highway code! Yet you see, every day, people trundling along in the outside lane when there are absolutely no cars in the two inner lanes....that really gets my goat!

Also, inconsiderate ****s that join a busy junction and cut straight across all lanes [in one manoeuvre] to get into the outside lane. This has the effect you mentioned of making someone brake which starts the chain reaction!

You have heard right regarding the chain reaction by the way. Think about it, how many times have you been on a m-way and the signs have been flashing 40mph for a good few miles. You expect an accident or large articulated vehicle or some such but no....nothing, the queue just suddenly opens up to a clear m-way in a heartbeat. This, I believe, is all down to those that are inconsiderate/ignorant or uncomfortable on the m-way and creating the chain reaction which forces the highways agency to flash the signs. they will say it's to keep the traffic flowing but I don't believe this at all.........keeping traffic moving at 70mph surely has the same effect as traffic moving at 40mph....just that it takes longer

Ahh, thanks for that

Re: Motorway Madness - A Rant

Controling speed on the motorway isn't just about slow drivers it about traffic flow. Ideally you need to look at the bigger picture not just what seems to be happening a few miles in front.

One local traffic expert on my local TV described very well indeed the simple principles of controlling traffic.

He said think of traffic as water flowing through a pipe - at the end of the day a good steady flow will give a better overall supply than a pipe constantly being turned off and on. And if the container (towns, traffic lights, slip roads, etc,) into which the water is flowing can't handle it then the tap has to be turned off or reduced. And to reduce the flow it may be necessary to close the supply many, many miles away from the problem.
He went on to say imagine pouring a bottle of beer into a glass - if done too quickly guess what happens.

This example just doesn't apply to our roads it applies to most other forms of transport.

Re: Motorway Madness - A Rant

I'm a lorry driver !!
I know the roads of the UK rather well and must confess i'd rather drive in London than Brum !!

From my experience the M5/M6 interchange is a right clusterfook...!!!
poorly though out plan and ill conceived idea to join 2major arterial motorways by what was around 200yds of slip roads !!!

Other points raised equally valid...

Lorry drivers running out of time...this means a failed delivery or the driver staying in truck !!
Middle Lane hogs !! If you drive in lane 2 say at 54mph you are then slower than a lot of trucks !! this means the truck will pass you at 56mph in the inside lane !! why ?? because trucks are banned in outside lane..!!!!

Europe has the right idea...their motorway Police will pull you over and fine you if you stay in middle lane longer than needed to overtake... think of this...
you hog middle lane at say even law, technically you are not allowed to undertake therefore lane 1 is not in use, now you have "blocked" lane 2 because of your speed, so all traffic in lane 2 behind you only has lane 3 to use...along with the traffic still in lane 3....

in my view and a lot of lorry drivers, all car drivers once they pass their test and BEFORE they get their licence from DVLA must attend 1 day with a lorry driver, 1 day with a coach driver to understand the roads form our side of the windscreen...
this will give them a better understanding of how much we can and cant see or do when driving 44 tons/55ft length of vehicles.

This would potentially save lives as car drivers might think twice about overtaking then pulling in sharply in front !! 44ton will not stop that quickly...!!

This entry slip lane to motorways are my real problem area....!!!!
the dotted line at the end of it is classed as a giveway line !! you are joining the motorway not me..!! therefore by law you are obliged to give way not expect those on motorway to move over....sometimes impossible with the traffic flow !!
Highway code states this....!!
if i can i will move over but not if its too busy !!
Courtesy costs nothing and makes for a great day on the road if everyone shows it and respect !!!

People don't seem to understand that inferior cars are not really welcome in the 3rd lane of motorways which are intended primarily for those you mention. They are needed for earning the coveted Driving Licence Bonus Points.
