depending on car the removal of alternator may be very time consuming as im sure driveshaft and exhaust require removal as alternator may sit between back end of engine and bulkhead.....auto electrician should give a free bench test of alternator if removed and taken to thier shop and they will advise on repair, get haines manual and look for a charge relay that the failure of the alternator can cause this to fail if fitted, wiring could also be at fault id first check all fuses and for bad connections or broken wires.
