Re: Are Laguna's that bad???

I really WOULDN'T buy a diesel. The Laguna II is one of my favourite cars, i have three at the minute and all are petrol for a reason.

In my opinion, the dCi ruins what is otherwise a great car, and seems to be a ticking time bomb.

Currently, I've got a 1.6 and 1.8 and the 3.0 V6. There's a HUGE difference between the 1.6 and 1.8, with the 1.6 struggling to give any kind of decent acceleration because it's carrying such a big car. The 1.8 is an excellent engine which is returning about 34 MPG and still has a bit of poke. I'm guessing the V6 wouldn't appeal as you're considering a diesel, but if money is no object this car can put a huge smile on your face!

As for the problems, without the turbo to worry about, it's just trivial electrical issues which all seem to affect numerous Lagunas so there's plenty of help on here! The lock buttons have failed on all of my keycards - easy fix if you're brave enough to crack the card open yourself, or can be done for £25 over the net. Electric window failures are common - I have 3 windows that don't work at the mo! My 1.6 kept going in to limp mode for a while, the problem was sorted out thanks to this site - loose ECU connections. Basically ownership just consists of correcting shoddy french electrical work!

The petrols seem to be cheaper than the dCis as well. Each of my Lagunas has cost less than £600!

Just persuade yourself out of the dCi!

Re: Are Laguna's that bad???

Lag 2s really are lovely cars, and I'm willing to live with the niggles on a petrol one for the wonderful, luxury car-like ride and the amount of toys you get even on basic models like mine. But the 1.9 dCi is a liability and the 2.2 is prone to cracked intake manifolds...

I know being Mondeo man is in itself a bit of a turn-off, but they're really good cars, especially if you want a diesel - most of all because there are a lot of them about so parts are never a problem. Personally, I don't think the Mondeo rides as well as the Lag 2, and it's not as quiet... But it does corner better, the interior trim doesn't appear to disintegrate, and either is going to make a Vectra feel like a truck...

I've seen Lag 2 V6s with LPG conversions on eBay for pennies... If it weren't for the cost of doing the timing belt, I'd definitely have one

Re: Are Laguna's that bad???

I would say if you can get one with a full service History and it all checks out then go for the petrol version.
I have a 1.6 Laguna Super Sports tourer, I Broke the rules when i bought mine, car had no service history, did not get a chance for a test drive untill i was picking the car up, I Have had to do a lot of work to it to keep it running but this has been down to botched repiars that have been done over the years, once these have all been corrected its a lovely car to drive, all the toys you get with them are fun to play with.

So if its got a full service History which checks out with the millage on the car then go for a petrol as i have heared the diesels can be a nightmare of a car.
