Re: renault scenic 99 to 03 any good

Hi Rob and welcome.

TBH, I have no direct experience with the scenic, but I would say that there is an inherent risk in moving from a 6 year old car, to one which is somewhere between 8 - 12 years old.

The megane (and the scenic which shares many components), is renault's most popular model, so from that, you can gather, that they were great when new (why else would people buy them?), but you will also find that they occur with equal frequence in these forums, often suffering the problems you describe.

Personally speaking (and I don't know if your budget allows, or if the change is motivated for move space, etc), I would try to buy a car newer than what you currently drive, otherwise your image of the Wife berating you after a breakdown, may well become reality.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Re: renault scenic 99 to 03 any good

My mother runs a 51 scenic petrol, and it has been near bullet proof. It is because of how good her car has been that pursuaded me to buy the diesel Espace.

Well, we live and learn. I have learned that she got lucky.

In answer to your main questions however, "can they really have that many faults?", Yes thay can.

I would buy a push bike before ever comitting to another Renault diesel.

If you need pursuading just type 1.9dci into the search engine on this site.

Re: renault scenic 99 to 03 any good

Got a 99 Scenic and to be honest we love it...
had a 1.6 Megane 5 door 99 model before and loved that too...

had a minor issue with water...passenger footwell getting a little wet....
traced to blocked drain holes under windscreen...5min job to fix....

worn gearbox mount.... 72 fitted.... fixed....

blocked sunroof holes... 2.00 + 15 mins to fix...

every car will have its faults eventually.... even Fords...

turbo 's can be expensive to fix...
french electrics can be a minefield....

but for space... we love our Scenic...
average 36/40mpg for our 1.6 Sport !!

twin sunroofs are fab !!! daughter loves her own sunroof lol.....

most faults listed are within scope of the average DIY enthusiast though... especially with help from the forum...
