espace mk3 or mk4?

I currently have a 99 v plate grand espace 2.2dt rtx with 135k miles on the dash, shes a straight old girl full history in scarabee green.
well im thinking of selling it and getting a mk4 diesel espace as i really love the shape and look of them, the only problem is that i have heard so many bad things about them especially with the turbos going and a problem with the key cards what do you guys think?
all replies took on board.

Re: espace mk3 or mk4?

Personally I would go for a late Mk3 2.2dCi rather than a mark 4 Espace, the mk4's do seem to be very troublesome although I haven't had the pleasure of working on one yet.

Mind you,I always said that I'd never have an Espace of any age until fairly recently.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Re: espace mk3 or mk4?

I'd say the Mark 3 actually has a worse reputation than the Mark 4? But I know exactly what you're saying about turbos. As a result, I'd avoid the 2.2 like the plague. It's not even a nice engine when it works, and is well known for returning 28 MPG if it's upset.

The 1.9 has a slightly better reputation, but I'd be going for the 3.0 dCi V6 Auto. Probably the most reliable diesel engine in the Espace range, and capable of up to 45 MPG on a motorway run. My Vel Satis had this engine and sure enough returned 44 MPG on the trip from Stranraer to Birmingham. It's sits at about 33-35 with town driving.

Also a 3.5 V6 Petrol with an LPG conversion should be considered if you came across one. A rock solid engine, and will propel your Espace to 60 in 8 seconds

As for the key cards, if you look after them they should be trouble free. They're fragile things... people drop them, sit on them and then wonder why they break.

Re: espace mk3 or mk4?

I would say your best bet would be a late Mk III with full service history, by far the best Espace to date but that's maybe because Ive now owned a 2002 2.0 16v Auto now for 5 years, so this maybe a little biased,

Ive had 5 years of trouble free motoring from my Espace apart from normal wear and tear parts failing, iam sorry i can't give advice on diesels as i wouldn't touch one with a barge poll for two reasons... i just don't like diesels nor would i entertain a Renault diesel engine purely because what Ive read on here over the last 5 years,

As for MPG i wouldn't expect to much as you have to remember these cars weigh a little over 1600kg so no matter what engines fitted it ain't going to give you great MPG unless you driving with a light foot or do lots of motorway driving,

Hope this helps Don

Re: espace mk3 or mk4?

Hi I have both a mk3 2.2dt "w" reg & a mk4 3.0dci (Awesome). The mk3 we have owned since it was about 18months old with 15,000 miles on the clock. It has now clocked up 182,000 miles albeit not trouble free. However the engine has never been apart not even for a head gasket, all that has been replaced engine wise has been service items plus glowplugs, water pump & timing belt other than that it has been reasonably reliable. As for the mk4 this car is amazing performance wise but is expensive to run £400 road tax & I don't agree with the mpg figures quoted ours isn't bad on a run 30+ maybe & mid to low twenties around town. We bought this car as it was top of the range 2 year old & less than £12,000. a steal .
