Unhappy Lots of questions!

Hi Guys,

Im new here and have lots of questions for you all, hope you can help

So my car is a 2003 Clio, 16v, 1.2 and at the moment there is a couple of things im a bit worried about. So here goes with my list:

1. My reverse lights do not work. We have tried changing bulbs, and also trying earthing, and things with the wires at the back. None of this has worked. I have noticed that about once every couple of months they decide to work once, but then go back to not working as normal.

2. When i try and start the car it just wont. I cant find anny pattern with this, like cold mornings or something like that. Its like it does it when it feels like it. I have been told its some sort of sensor under the bonnet, and so whenever it does this, my boyfriend has to go and 'wiggle' it to make the car start. This can sometimes take 10 minutes..

3. The lights on my dash board seem to come on also whenever they feel like it. The combinations are normally airbag and service light together. Or the engine light with the one in the middile which has a coil ? I think its the electric light.. And the others just come on randomly. It normally lasts a couple of days and then they turn off again. Nothing changes with the car (that i can feel while driving) it just seems like the electrics..

It has passed all its MOT's, and as of yet nothing major has happened to it.. Even though it has now done over 100,000 miles.. This worries me as i think the makor things are likely to be happening soon..

Does this make sense to anyone? If yes then the answers would be grately appriciated! I am not great with cars myself, so will be passing on any info to my boyfriend .

Thanks guys!

Re: Lots of questions!

Sounds unlikely to pass the MoT again with electric probs like that ,anyway:

Start at the basic lvl .
Get the battery tested
moving on from there check the battery connections and clean them .

Get yer boyfriend to wiggle the main + and - leads where they join on to car body/engine/starter/alternator or u could even have a wiggle yourself.
Make sure the connections are good there also.

If battery seems ok in terms of condition probably then move on to check the alternator, but if the battery has a good charge it may not be that.

Check and reseat any fuses + visible relays and make sure there is no dampness around them.
If it was just starting you could check, the starter motor and solenoid, ignition leads for tracking(electrical tracking) or cracks + give plugs a good clean/replace.

If it was reversing lights solely the most likely culprit from what u describe would be the reversing light switch on the gearbox.

Dash lights..could be anything yet again.

Since its general electrical problems check the main items first then if they seem ok move on to each problem starting with ,well starting really..
