Its too late to say this now but its always worth doing your homework on a specific vehicle before buying it as to whether it has a timing belt or chain. You can then go armed knowing whether you have to ask the question or not. Thats not to say chains don't break because they do, but they tend to stretch over time rather than break and kill the engine.

Thanks, will keep that in mind for the next car purchase which is going to be sooner than expected now!
Apparently the belt hasn't gone, only the bearing.
