Bet that would've looked fab through the thermal camera on police helicopter!

I always forget that 'brake pads have to bed in' after being fitted new (often by hubby the day before)
- yet as I close in on the first junction of the day.. I always remember those words as I'm frantically bashing away at the brake pedal lol.

Please keep adding your heart stopping car failure moments.

Re: What's the scariest car failure you've had while driving?

I had a 1.6 205 GTi yonks ago and myself and 4 friends went down to Cornwall in it loaded to the max. Pressing on down narrow country lanes in Cornwall i could feel the brakes were fading due to overheating so i backed off to allow them to cool down. The car in front of me decided he was gonna stop for no reason and i had to slam the brakes on knowing they were gonna be an issue. The pedal sank about 3 inches and my life flashed before me as i thought we were gonna rear end the car in front. All my friends screamed at the same time but the brakes miraculously stopped us about 2mm short! I was shaking so much we just stopped for half hour to let the brakes cool properly.

Re: What's the scariest car failure you've had while driving?

Worst thing that happened to me was when I was driving my mother [who has severe dementia] home after visiting my terminally ill father in hospital and the brakes on my Clio decided to give up! Was terrifying! Was coming up to a roundabout and although braking, the car seemed to be going faster! Pumped the brake like mad and it got us stopped. Managed to get the car home by pumping the brakes like mad every time I needed to stop. Rang the RAC who came and checked the car - said nothing was wrong! Took the car to the garage the next day and it cost me over 300 to get it fixed. Don't think I will trust the RAC again though!

my first car was a 1977 mini clubman, one night on the way home in the country the car had a total electrical failure ie no lights i couldn't see three feet in front,so pulled torch out of boot and drove home hanging out of the window with said torch, can laugh about it now!

Re: What's the scariest car failure you've had while driving?

I remember driving home from the town center back in 1994 and in the middle of a big down poor of rain and the wiper arm linkage broke leaving me totally blind through the windscreen so i drove home with my head sticking out of the drivers side and was soaking wet by the time i got home and feeling rather cold lol .
