Clio III - Rumble Noise - Warranty Claim on Brakes?

I own a Clio 1.5 DCI on a 2009 plate with about 16k miles on the clock.

Since buying the car we've had it back to the dealership on three separate occasions, the latest being this week, for a rumbling noise from the front of the car.

The first time the car went back, the dealership diagnosed the problem as a control arm problem after having the car three days and threatening to drop the engine out to find the noise.

The second time the fault was diagnosed as the brakes and they changed the front brake callipers.

Each time we have got the car back, parts have been changed accordingly and the problem has gone away for about 3-4 thousand miles.

This last time, the mechanic who initially looked around the car before taking it into the workshop said that there was a known issue with the "Brake Pads" and that he knew what it would be.

When we picked the car up we were told that Renault have brought out a revised front calliper and they would happily replace it under warranty, along with new brake discs, but I will have to pay for replacement brake pads at 53.

I'm now slightly confused as to where problem lies and wondering if anyone else has had this problem. If the problem is with the brake pads then surely Renault should cover the cost of them, especially as the car has been back on three occasions the same fault.

Many thanks in advance.

So they're admitting the calipers are at fault but since it makes sense to stick new pads on too they're charging you for them? IMHO I'd make them pay it, as the dodgy calipers were their fault in the first instance.

The fact you have had 16,000 miles use from the pads which are essentially a wear and tear item I'm not surprised they wish to charge but a reduced cost would be appropriate.

Calipers and discs would be warranty items at 16,000miles, but pads would not. As far as Renault is concerned, you might possibly have worn them out with heavy braking (I'm not saying you did).
53 is more than reasonable, I would say.

Re: Clio III - Rumble Noise - Warranty Claim on Brakes?

It is a little known fact (but one worth bearing in mind) that parts replaced under warranty only come with the remainder of the warranty for those items on the car itself.

An example; say car comes with 3 year warranty, and the battery fails after 2.5 years (due to a manufacturing defect) - replacement battery comes with the remaining 0.5 year-worth of warranty, not the 3 years you would have if you paid even just a fractional amount of the price of replacement.

In other words, there is no seperate parts warranty on items replaced in entirety by warranty - any subsequent issues are dealt with on a 'Goodwill' basis.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
