Definitely sounds like a clutch issue.
Look at the clutch release lever, and see what it is impacting on (when accelerating) and this movement is the one you want to try to replicate (pull the engine, etc) so as to find out which mount is moving too much.
Not entirely sure what you mean by this. 'Scuse the stupidity. Do you mean essentially replicate what's happening under the bonnet by hand and see what impact it has to identify what needs replacing?
Yes, you've got it.
First look at the lever, and see how it could be affected by the movement of the engine/gearbox. This will help you determine which way the engine is moving.
Then try to pull the engine in that direction, and see which mount should be resisting you, but is allowing too much movement. (You may find it easier to do this second step logically, if access is difficult, but once logic has led you to the mount, check it before investing in replacements)
