The worst call centre I know of is my credit card company. I have a couple of VISA cards with them, so they're still allowed to ring me with special offers in spite of my number being TPS registered.

Not content with keep sending me credit card cheques (that go straight in the shredder) they keep phoning with special offers on balance transfers and cash advances. The problem is that they have this ludicrously antisocial calling system which auto-dials customers without first making sure there's an operator available to talk to them. If you pick up and there's nobody free, it just hangs up on you. Worse still, the system phones daily until someone's actually managed to speak to you.

Sometimes, I've had this happen at least half a dozen days in a row, by which time I've been ready to kill someone. When you finally get to speak to someone, the nuiscance calls stop. That's how, after a few times, I eventually worked out who it was.

I complained to BT, but they claim they can't do anything because the caller ID is 'unavailable' rather than 'withheld.' I asked them to just block 'unavailable' callers, but they say it can't be done. Last time round, I gave the poor operator from the bank a whole load of abuse and told them I didn't want to be contacted again. It's improved the situation a great deal, but it still happens from time to time.

Edit: I forgot the truly ironic part. I have both cards set up to pay the balance in full by direct debit every month. I only really use them for business expenses, so that I'm not personally out of pocket before I can put my claim in. No matter how hard I try, I can't get through to them that if they lend me 10 grand, it'll only get taken out of my bank by direct debit the following month anyway. Muppets!

Have you tried calling your credit card company and finding out what contact permissions they have set for you? Be worthwhile double checking. Don't do it when you receive a cold call though; depending on who it is it could be an outsourced company calling you and they won't be able to access your credit company's systems (or be arsed to feed it back probably...)

You're not wrong! It reminds me that my Visa card company, who shall remain nameless but they are one of the big ones, are utter muppets.

When I was in Cornwall at the beginning of August, I had my card refused for a 40 bill - I was soooo embaressed but also concerned becasue I knew I was nowhere near the barmey credit limits these companies dish out. Out comes the cash and I dashed to the car to phone them.

"We've put a temporary stop on the card because there are a couple of transactions that we wanted to check with you and you haven't contacted us to confirm them".

What transactions, how do I know I should contact you?

"We've written to you!"

Doohh!! I'm on holiday, why haven't you phoned me? Utter plonkers.

To show how ludicrous the situation really is, whilst in Spain a couple of weeks later I used the same card twice in Cash machines to withdraw 400 Euros at a time with no problem at all - if that isn't a potential fraud job I don't know what is.

My God - I wish I had a recording of the phone call I've just had with Tesco. We have our groceries delivered on a Friday evening so on a Saturday we can go out with the little 'un for a full day. I was speaking to a chap called Robert who did not speak very good English. After finally getting past the address I told him that I had some items missing. Of the 39 items we ordered, 10 were missing and 1 was broken

Me: "Can you organise for these to be rescheduled for delivery tomorrow?"
Robert: "I'm afraid that I will only be able to offer you a refund"
Me: "I'm sorry - that's not good enough. I really need it to be delivered"
Robert: "If I can be firm with you, we do not offer a re-delivery, only a refund"
Me: "Cough, splutter. WHAT! You are not going to be firm with me!"

He does a massive back pedal:

Robert: "Sorry - I didn't mean to offend you"
Me: "No - but that was a very poor choice of words. We rely on your service blah, blah, blah. My child's milk for her breakfast was included in the order blah, blah, blah (which was true)"

He finally agreed to reschedule the delivery but made it sound as though this was doing me a huge favour

What the hell happened to good service in this country?

Down the tubes... I stay very regularly in hotels all around the country from 4* hotels in London to privately owned tiny hotels in the country. Guess where I get the best service?
