AUTOExpress **** Up?

Has any one read the piece about the lady with the faulty Scenic 1.9dCi in the ADVICE FROM THE TRADE section of the latest 'AUTOExpress'? Readers' queries are answered by AE's team of experts.

A woman writes in and asks the following:

Q My 2002 Renault Scenic 1.9dCi has developed a fault. Although the car is fine under light acceleration, if I push the throttle harder it feels as if the car is losing rather than gaining power. And this sluggishness is accompanied by a loud whistling noise. Any idea what the cause might be?

A It sounds as though there's an air leak somewhere and, as the engine is a turbodiesel, check the inlet pipe first. Sometimes the clip holding these pipes in place can work loose. Tighten it and the whistling should disappear, and the engine will be back to full power too.

Would anything else have come to mind first? This is a serious situation and most of us should know that the more likely diagnosis is far more serious and even dangerous under certain circumstances!

If you think that you have a better idea at what the correct diagnosis is,
e-mail it to:
