Question Buying Advice

Never owned a Renault before.

I need a second car as SHMBO has found a part time job and need a vehicle. I have seen a 2002 Renault Laguna 1.8 Privilege Estate with 65000 miles 6 month tax and mot, the advert states 'great condition', being sold by a private seller.

Can anyone give me any advice what to look for when I view this car, I have done some limited research on tinternet and these cars don't seem to have been well received e.g electrical problems, tyre pressure sensor problems etc.

What should I be looking to pay for this car from a private seller.

Any reviews or opinions by owners of this car or any Renault experts would be appreciated.

Re: Buying Advice

Good news is the petrol engines are a lot more reliable than the diesel models. TPMS can be problematic but can be turned off, check the car inside for dampness, the sunroof drains can get blocked causing water ingression. Window winder mech's can go wrong as well but thats common for most Renaults of that era. Just check all the electrics work and there's no clonking from the rear bushes and you should be ok. I wouldn't go over approx 850-1000, there's lots out there to choose from.

Re: Buying Advice

Start it 10 or 20 times and if it fails once, walk away. I had a corroded starter solenoid connector which entailed a lot of work. Take a view about the general condition of the loom in the engine compartment and, further to the water ingress problem, pour a jug of water down the sunroof drains and make sure it comes out from the backs of the wheel arches. If they're blocked the water gets in and rots the fuse box and UCH . Bad news. If it's been garaged, so much the better.
