Unhappy Poor mpg 1.6 auto

I'm really starting to wonder if i've got a problem, my scenic 2 1.6VVTi Auto(06 plate) is giving really poor mpg. I do generally have the a/c on and am aware autos tend to be worse tham manuals, but at last fill up when i reset computer it was showing 22mpg and 16mpg average on the trip meter. I've been hanging on to make sure the car was fully run-in and its now done 4500miles.
Can anyone with same model give me an idea as to what they get mpg wise?
Any thought welcome........

16-22 MPG seems poor even for an auto-matic.

16-22 Phew!!

Iím on a Lag2 2.2 dTi manual so comparing it with mine wonít really help you.

I think itís difficult comparing MPG, even with the same makes & type of car because of road conditions, and driving styles.

A much fairer figure would be obtained by getting on the M/way zero the MPG puter straight away after hitting top gear, then drive at a steady speed say 60 MPH, get off at the next junction then travel back in the opposite direction at the same speed, check your MPH when you get back to the junction you started out from. This will take into account the ups and downs of the M/way.

Iíve done this when Iíve seen disappointing figures in town traffic conditions in the circumstance of the above on the M/way the figure went from 31 Ė34 MPG up to a tad under 60MPG

I wish I did more clear, M/way driving.

Poor mpg

I have a 1999 1.6 8 valve auto and its much the same. Very low 20's to the gallon. I think the problem is that it is vastly underpowered. It is a gutless pain in the a** on hills and I have to do a minimum 45-50 mph before it will shift into 4th gear. Every time you slow for a bend, or if you get stuck behind someone doing 40mph it downshifts to third. It's ok on level roads or motorways. Unfortunately it's all hilly B roads round here. I've only had it three weeks, but it'll have to go. Either that or I move to Holland !!

Those figures are very bad, the only car I can compare yours with is a Scorpio I used for 2 years.

I had a Scorpio 2.0 Auto which averaged 28mpg mainly driving in London, old technology engine.
