Sounds like rain water drips on the alternator when parked . I had this problem while back and noticed that the protecting cover under the bonnet was soaked every time it rained . I made adjustment to the seal under the bonnet by the windscreen and that sorted it out.
Worth checking.

In case anybody else comes across this wondering what the answer was - it was/is the thermoplunger thing that helps heat the coolant quicker when its cold. Nice to know its normal and nothing is about to go pop!
