Vel Satis 2.2dci fuel economy?

Hi there, I am new to this forum and new to being a Renault owner so I will most likely have lots of daft questions to ask!

I bought a 2003 Vel Satis 2.2dci 3 weeks ago and so far I am very pleased with it and relieved that everything seems to work so far

One thing I was wondering is what sort fo fuel economy should I expect to get on a long ish run. I bought the car for commuting as I have just got a new job 60 miles from where I live so needed a diesel. So far on the only long run it has done I achieved about 37 to the gallon (according to the computer). Does this sound about right, should I expect more, is my right foot too heavy? It is not due a service but I plan to change the oil and filters just incase, including the fuel filter just incase this will help.

Hi there, I have a 3.0 DCi Auto. I don't know how many miles yours has covered or if its manual or auto, but I wouldn't say that these figures are worryingly low (they are quite close to mine). It has to be borne in mind that these cars are very heavy, so a smaller, less powerful engine (albeit more efficient - 4 cylinders vs 6 cylinders), has to work harder to haul the car around. Plus, they aren't the most aerodynamic shapes, having to punch quite a sizeable hole in the air. (The reason I state this is in the hope that your fuel economy expectations haven't been raised due to 'official figures' often being quoted).

I found using a diesel fuel additive helped to increase the economy, and indeed averaged 43mpg for a 700-odd mile round trip to Wales. This included the Wife & baby, plus luggage.

Changing the oil & filters will make an improvement, as will ensuring your tyres are at the correct pressures, and trying to drive with economy in mind (i.e. looking ahead, changing up early, and so on). Fuel economy also drops at this time of year due to the engine running rich for a greater duration, plus all the extra ancillaries being used take their toll.

Enjoy your car, you are in a very exclusive motor.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Thanks for that info Paul. I was not expecting great things do do not worry, if I can get it up to about 40 to the gallon I will be happy, guess I am not far from that at the moment so I will start grinning. The car is quite high mileage wise but seems to have been well looked after and hides it 100000 miles very well.

I will try running some injector cleaner through the engine when I get the fuel filter done and make sure everything else is looking as it should. It will get a good test from tomorrow as I am heading from Southampton to Norfolk then up to Scotland and back over the next week!

As you say, it seems to be a fairly exclusive motor, I have only ever seen one other on the road since I got mine and that was in Spain last week! I took it to get the wheels balanced yesterday and had to help the fitter drive it into the garage!

Thanks all for the welcome messages!
