Laguna mark 1, advice best engine / model

After being given a 1996 Laguna I'm loving it, I'm now looking to get Laguna Estate mark 1 (same model). Now these cars are old / lots of esperience on this forum. Any advice on best engine / model to look for / buying advice / I'm looking at 100,000 estates, whats expected average mileage on these before major wear?

My current Laguna 2.0 RXE has 160,000 on the clock and runs like a dream (apart from the heating!). Renault garage guy (not dealership) says life in it yet, MOT will tell if suspension problem free.
Currently in 68fastback's garage:
1996 Laguna RXE 2.0 Petrol, 1973 VW Campervan.

2.0L or 3.0L are the best. though the mk1 diesels are more relaible than the mk2 models.
upgrading to LPG is a good option to maintain low running fuel costs for the long term.

if your after parts for interior heating system or suspension system, PM me
i have a load of bits off my laggy1, sports suspension, aircon heater matrixes, sports exhaust, and lots of other little bit n bobs off fully spec'd RXE.

The 1.9 dTi's are OK but eat gearboxes, the 1.8 16 valve estate we had was really good but a little sluggish if you like to drive 'enthusiastically'.The F4R 2 litre is again good, the 16 valve petrols do seem to be very short geared though making motorways tiresome.Avoid the late Mk1 dCi though (which replaced the dTi),it was very early in the exploration into common rail technology for Renault passenger cars and they can be very flaky.

If you can stomach the fuel costs,a V6 24v manual would be great.

I enjoyed owning all of our Lag 1's,they treated us very well and it would be difficult to find a better family car for the money.
