Fill fuel tank?

It used to be recommended to fill your petrol tank to prevent internal condensation and rust:

Forgetting about lugging around extra fuel and its effect on your mpg.

Is that still good practice?

Im thinking more about diesel cars and "water in the fuel"..
Will having a full tank of diesel,"topped off" regularly reduce the build up of water .. or does it not matter?

Re: Fill fuel tank?

I have heard about doing this for aircraft when they are parked up for a month or so but never for cars. Maybe the same applies. If it is used on a regular basis then I don't see a problem

Re: Fill fuel tank?

I have only ever filled the tank on 1 car and that was my Audi because the fuel gauge didnt work so I filled it to the top and topped it up every 150 miles

Re: Fill fuel tank?

It used to be many years ago but it is not now.

Save your MPG by using half a tank at a time.

A problem well stated is a problem half solved !

Re: Fill fuel tank?

Practically all car fuel tanks are now made of plastic as are the fuel lines so the problem rust or corrosion is negligible.

Aslo regular changes or draining the fuel filter on a diesel should reduce the risk of water entering the fuel system.

Regarding parked aircraft it is entirely for a different reason. On many aircraft the fuel tanks form part of the framework and inherent strength of its construction so by keeping them filled it reduces the risk of deformation or undue stresses.
