hi just a thought chaps,does a timing belt usually snap on startup,if it's going to snap at all.

No, from what I've seen on here they can let go at anytime.

1.6 Valve-Matic SR. Red hot, toasty feet.

Bit of a silly question to be honest, you don't want the belt to break at any time and you can never tell when. Even if your fast enough to detect the belt break at start up, unless you are extremely lucky engine damage can still occur.

It usually but not always happens at changes of engine speed, when changing gear for instance or having the throttle blip in neutral.

Who would design a vehicle that falls over when you stop?

If you find a fix for your problem please let us know it will help others.
