Hi all, first timer here. Been searching q&a to see if I can see an answer to my problem but nothing that specific so I hope I am not covering old ground here. I have just imported a 2008 laguna dci 180 gt hatchback into New Zealand. Quite a mission but that's another story. I haven't seen it in the flesh yet as its parked up in a garage in Auckland awaiting certification. Been there 3 days so far as they can't find the vin in whatever data base it is they use. Still waiting to hear back from Renault NZ but in the mean time thought I would throw this one out there. Has anybody got one of these babies in their garage and if so does the vin number go something like:VF1BTDE0639XXXXXX. I am fairly sure this model was never offered in NZ so maybe that may be the issue? Any advice appreciated

I think you can see the Vin by looking from the outside of the car just behind the left side of the wind screen it's likely on a stick on sticker as well as other info on the B pillar as you open the drivers door.

Hi Ralph, thanks for the reply. I think maybe I wasn't so clear with my description. I am fairly sure all the stamped vins on the car and the ownership papers match but when they search for it in the database there is a problem finding a match. The car is ex UK.Anyway he's getting back to me today. Really hoping for good news. Thanks again. Ivan

I think the problem is primarily because the system they have used initially is centred on vehicles officially imported to their domestic market.

They would need to use a global database to find your car/derivative, but they should certainly be able to do so.

There is normally 2 possible avenues forward; the first (and probably easiest), would be to obtain a Certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer which confirms that the car adheres to the various safety & emission standards for the market it's now residing in. The second method would be for the vehicle to undergo a 'single vehicle type approval' (or whatever the NZ equivalent is), whereby the car is checked at a test centre to ensure compliance.

Thanks Paul, yes I remember reading something to that effect on our local vtnz site. When speaking to the certifier today he says all he really needs is to decode the vin but when I try doing this using website decoders they always come back with incorrect check number.
I think also the year of manufacture which I understand to be the 10th digit from the left is a 3 and its a 2008 model?

A fairly straightforward way to corroborate the month/year of manufacture is to check the date stamp on the inside of a few trim panels that you can be sure are original.

Manufacturers operate on a stock system called Just in time, whereby only a few weeks (or even just a few day's worth of components are held in stock on the assembly lines.

It might be an idea just to look at some parts (parcel shelf, boot carpet, etc) just to see if they match up.

You can from this link, also email Renault UK directly; http://www.renault.co.uk/contact/customerservices.aspx

This seems to be the bit your certifier is concerned with?
verifying that the vehicle met the required safety emissions and frontal impact standards when manufactured
all the other bits seem to be testing by certifier.

By the sound of the regs..you would think its the certifiers job to check back to see emission /impact data from the info youve supplied and the correct VIN.

I suppose you need to keep him friendly :)

Checking back thru renault UK as Paul suggested..and hence back thru batch and date of assembly and whatever data the manufacturers supplied for that particular batch of cars.Would the original UK reg .which would have been done with that vin.. and the manufacturer data supplied with it be of any use in tracing the emissions and tech data the UK authorities used?

thanks guys, this forum already proving invaluable. Spent ages trying to find the correct form to email Renault UK then gave up. I am due to fly up to Auckland tomorrow so hopefully armed with this info can sort it out. Having the 11 hour time diff between us does make things a little more awkward.
