Renault Megane Convertable (at aged 18)

I've always wanted a hard top convertible because I'm strangely amazed about them, and I also have a Renault Clio which has been my first car for about a year now.

I've been looking at black ones and I really like them. My budget is 2,500 and I'm wondering if anyone owns them, if you recommend for me to get one?

My mum and brother think its a girls car whereas one of my friends said it was a hairdressers car.
I personally like them because they're sleek and I think they look quite stylish, and the insurance is only 1,600 for me (current insurance for me is 2,500)

Is there any common problems with them that I should be concerned about, or if anyone has any advice?
This is the one I was looking at.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section

Hi there.

This is probably the most important part you should read;

Mechanically, it's fundamentally the same as the hatch, but the roof has been known to fail and/or leak, both of which are costly to fix, and have caused many owners to trade their cars.

I wouldn't worry about any 'image' issues - it's you who'll be buying & running the car, so if you like it - that's what counts the most.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Re: Renault Megane Convertable (at aged 18)

It is hardtop.
It is cheap(would want to be with that mileage, motorway or not)
The Karmann design does give it some exclusivity.
mho it does look better than the other meg II's and better than meg III convertibles.

Its kind of slow and heavy even in 1.6
All the servicing/repairs,i dont see any mention of the roof or transmission..
For the cash..with some negioation too maybe, you wont lose much if it doesnt work out, when the summer is over!
Get a pro check before buying?
How does it compare costwise in the UK to say.. a merc slk 200 of the 2004 era(2004-2011 model)?

Problems, aside from what Vel mentioned, most of the running gear should be similar to the reg 2004 meg II(4th best selling car in the Uk thru most of its lifetime Ive read.)

The service/repair action in the last 10-15k miles would in theory have cost over 1k so on the mileage most of this work has been done in the last 18 months, now it has to be sold....because to get the roof/transmission/electrics sorted will cost over a grand?
Still If I had 2k spare and it tested ok I might go for it.

Don't be distracted by silly opinions - a lot of open-top cars are wrongly classified as 'hair dressers' cars. Some colours may look girlie but the black looks good for a guy.
As with any car ad, if you go to view the car, ask to see receipts for all the service/repairs as described in the adverts and be suspicious of any 'lost' receipts. Also in the ad you've listed there is mention of an unrepaired door mirror - if the owner couldn't be bothered to get it fixed (if that is the case?) - so check the operation of the folding roof very carefully as if the motors are sticky its unlikely he/she would bother to get those problems sorted too.
