youve probably had the glowplugs changed and sounds as if they are working but there is a timer which turns them on for about 12 secs before the engine gets started from cold. the light may only be iluminated on your dash for 5 secs but the relay is still on for the further 7 secs or so to give the glow plugs power.
it may be a coincidence that the temperatures are getting sub zero at this time of year and you engine needs just a bit more heat to start combined with an old engine if any compression is lost.
and also timer can be knackered not holding relay for enough time, wiring problem , input problem to timer module ( eng temp sensor faulty giving timer module false reading thinking engine is warm and not requiring heat) ( if your engine is the type with the micro switches on the injection pump these may need checked/adjusted as at idle the switch will be made to give timer a voltage but on pressing accelerator the switch opens to stop voltage to timer relay.)
i done away with mine and fitted a heavy duty relay under the bonnet and a push button under the steering wheel to power it up,,,a bit old school but 10 secs holding button in the morning and works perfect and cost a few pounds
