megane coupe auto problem

I bought a 51 plate Megane Coupe with 40k on it. I have done 4k in it in the last 6 weeks with no problems at all. Yesterday I was on the motorway and the car dropped into 3rd and the auto warning light came on. I pulled onto the hard shoulder turned off the engine and swithced on again and no problem. Car drove perfect the rest of the day and I covered another 250 miles.

Should I be concerned about this, am I looking at a big bill? I bought the car with a months warranty which is up but if this is going to be expensive can I force the dealer to contribute.

When the warning light comes on, the transmission goes into 'safe' (limp home) mode, which is why it changed down to 3rd gear. This is the ECU taking control and trying to limit potential damage.

The fact that when you switched off, then restarted and all was fine indicates an intermittant fault. These are the worst possible to track down and nothing can be done really unless the fault is actually there at the time.

I'm not entirely sure about this (and hopefully someone will confirm) but it could be that a fault code has been logged in the transmission ECU even though the fault is intermittant. It may be worthwhile having the ECU scanned for possible fault codes by an independant garage or automatic transmission specialist. At least then you will know if the future problems are likely to be major or minor.
