I must admit, that there is a bit of one-upmanship going on in the car world, Mercedes has a 7-speed auto, Lexus launches an 8-speed...
The main reason is so that the car can be in the most 'comfortable' gear whatever the driving scenario - this reduces emissions (useful for CO2/tax bandings), and helps to save fuel.
Also, a high top gear can reduce engine wear, so there are longer-term benefits.
Agreed, it can be confusing as the actual gear selection is more congested - the 'price of progress'!

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

So what next 7 gears, 8 gears, 9 gears?

We already have '4 up 2 down' gearboxes, so '4 up 4 down' is probably about the sensible limit before things get too confusing for Mr Average. That would take us to a 7 speed box (excluding reverse.) I can't see that they're likely to go beyond that.

As VS says, there are already 7 speed autos, though the gear changing is all done for you then. CVT will wipe the floor with all fixed ratio automatics if they ever manage to design a cost effective and robust box.
With the amount of town traffic all we really need is in-town gears and an overdrive for when we venture out on the open road / motorways.
I haven't had another diesel to compare it with, but 6th on mine feels like an extra overdrive. I'm pretty sure the engine's running at lower RPMs than other diesels I've been in at 70, and while 6th gear loses out on the excellent in-gear acceleration that most diesels would have in 5th, it's quite capable of maintaining a set speed and providing reasonable acceleration without dropping down to 5th.

It's a nice feature to have, but I wouldn't trade wider ratios on the other gears for a 5 speed box that did the same RPM in 5th. With a 6th gear, you get to have your cake and eat it.

I suppose the big question is whether or not 6th gear offers significant fuel savings over 5th. I'll have to try it sometime.

I think that it is all to do with power on the 1.6 models when it came out they had a five speed gear box and it was very under powered giving it a poor mpg on the motorway so rather than change the engine size on the 1.6 models they put a 6 speed gear box in to give it better mpg weather its any good i do not know.

A gimmic would be a guess

My bus has the 6spd box. Yes it did take a little getting used to, but it was more just me forgetting I had another cog to play with. Now it's second nature to pop it into 6th.
I don't have any experience of the petrol models, but my oil burner is happy to plod along in 6th from anywhere around 50mph and has enough torque that it doesn't require a drop of gear at motorway speeds to quickly overtake.
I'm sure Renault marketed this box as being there to keep the engine in it's optimum "power band."
It does plod along happily in 6th but occasionally I find myself looking for another gear ....... habit or maybe I'm just being pro-active for when a 7spd box is introduced

I think I have CDO. It's like OCD, but with ALL THE LETTERS IN THE RIGHT ORDER

Just out of interest - Are the other gear ratios different in the 6 speed box ? - or is the 6th speed literally just an added top ratio? - I think where the Scenic would benefit is in the spacings of the lower ratios. I find it very frustrating not being able to pull away at low speeds even in 2nd.
