I've just fitted a new accessory belt tensioner to my Chrysler Grand Voyager.

69.99 from a main dealer - and I had to collect it from 30 miles away.

$28.00 from an independent factor in the US.
Thats 14.25 including sellers profit and local taxes.

The US one could be bought and delivered to me for $38.50 / 19.60

If I didn't need the part ASAP, theres no way I would have gone to the UK rip-off merchant.

You can get it repaired (or try it yourself if you wish). I have a technique with a heat gun which when you gently heat the plastic will help it to reform to its original shape (it is said that the plastic has a memory), but I must stress that the temperature is raised gently - otherwise you risk the plastic glazing/melting/scorching.

If you can remove the trim from the car for this purpose, then even better.

Post a picture if you can.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

I'm sure even they can type a number in to a keyboard and anyway four different dealers confirmed the new price.

If anyone knows of an Avantime in a breakers yard please let me know

In a previous life I used to work for a very large Dutch Electronics company, and they used to do the same bizzare pricing ....
the reason .....
When an out of production product ran out of spares before the 7 year spares guarantee expired then rather going to the expense of retooling to manufacture the part or assembly they used to price it out of contention, making the unit cheaper to replace than repair .... maybe it a similar issue .... maybe there are no spares available for the handle ... and rather than retool to make it, Renault price it so high no one will buy it .... simple supply and demand really.

Just a thought

Why is it the older I get .... the better I think I was ?
