1999 laguna 2.0 Rti,strange squeaks

Hi, my first post and a problem.
I have just bought the above car, which has only been a taxi for 40k, with a staggering 148k on the clock. The engine sounds good now I have replaced the pencil coils , although I have to weld or replace the manifold or gasket as it has a slight blow. But what is driving me mad, is when I turn left I get a squealing noise, almost a grating squeal. Also when I reverse on a lock I have got a slight groaning grating noise, which you can also hear if I bounce the wing up and down I suspect it could be a shock absorber or spring. However a friend says a dry c.v joint and to get it greased. Any help appreciated thanks, oh and I'm in Plymouth.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

To start with I'd jack the front of the car up and have a look at the front CV gaiters. If one is split and the joint has lost it's grease, then this should give you a clue as to where the noise is coming from.

Broken coil springs are common,so whilst it's off the ground inspect the ends of the springs carefully. Also, turn the wheel from side to side as strut bearings have a tendency to wear and be noisy. The bearing is a slightly strange arrangement as it's between the bottom spring pan and the strut rather than in the top of the strut on most other cars.

Also, take a wheel off and check the front discs and pads. When I bought my Lag 1 some tosspot had fitted new pads to badly worn discs and this caused a sqeaking/grating noise when driving.

If all seems well with the above, then get back to us as I'm sure we can come up with some more ideas!

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Hi, also check on ful lock that the wheel arch liner in not touching the tyre.... the power steering would also make a noise at full lock, but I thinks that more or less normal (apparently you're not supposed to go full lock anyway or switch the car off with the wheels at full lock).

At 145,000 miles, the ONLY squeak my Laguna had was the rear brakes, not during braking but just the mechanism itself I think when you pressed the pedal... could be annoying in summer with the windows down
