Hi I am New - Found Out What The Catch Was!

Last Thursday after searching what seemed the world for a 7 seater for my wife I found a new ad on auto-trader.
W reg Espace, 71,000 mls, FSH, Auto, Leather, 3 S/roofs. etc etc. Asking Price 3650.
Straight away the alarm bells went as for this age and mileage it was too cheap by about 1200.
After buying car and fantastic weekend falling in love with it, room, comfort, handling, this morning reality bit!!!
At 72,000 miles this car is due a timing belt, water pump, major service. Because its an engine out job renault specialists dont want to touch, and renault are talking getting close to 2000 to fix.
I am not devestated as i knew the car was cheap and one would like to hope that once this work was done i've got a fairly decent motor for 5500 but I still feel this money for servicing is a bit insane. One option is to use renault labour 970 but buy parts myself 530. But dont know if you can do that??? Any ideas apart from suicide would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Not too sure on the service side but I would also check when the auto fluid was last changed and if in doubt change that as well, you don't want the autobox to fail.

Welcome to the fourm.

Have you tried any indepenent specialists for quotes or have they all said no?

There are a couple on the fourm who will hopefully be along to offer advice.

I would have thought this was a tasty job for an indy at half that price, but then again, I know nowt

Hi there, and welcome.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, my friend (as you've found out), and that's why the car was priced to sell. Still, it would be worse if there was a major fault on it (or it was stolen).

The Renault dealer won't fit non-Renault parts (they could lose their franchise with Renault if that occured). But what you could do is get Renault to do the major work, and a specialist or recomended independent to carry out the service aspect - I know it won't reduce the total figure by much, but it may help to soften the blow by a useful amount.

Don't think that you've bought a lemon - the car's value will be a lot closer to book, once this work's been done, so you're not throwing money away on nothing.

Hope that helps,

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
