I have run a year 2000 Scenic 1.4 16v now for 9 years and it has now covered 130000 miles. I can honestly say it has been a fantastic car. Apart from a clutch, driveshaft and 2 bottom ball joints all I have done is standard servicing ( including 2 cambelt and water pumps changes.......I have the scars to prove it!!) It rarely returns less than 40mpg and on a 3000 mile camping trip this year in France and Italy it returned an almost unbelievable 47mpg on the auto routes.
My car to get to work in is a little 1.2 8v Fiat Punto which again has been a great car but the rot has got into the rear end and although I don't mind spannering I really be bothered to weld it.
I am busy looking at cars to buy, my budget is about £800 and I would like a car more comfy than the Punto, good on the juice, reliable and fairly easy to work on.
After the experience of the Scenic I would not hesitate in buying a Megane I, I have been looking for a decent spec 1.4 16v with low miles but one has not popped up yet and the cheapest tax for this one appears to be pre march 2000. If I go for a 1.6 it appears a post march 2000 is cheaper to tax than a pre march 2000. But also the diesels seem good value aswell???
Whilst searching however I noticed Megane II's cropping up at what appears to be bargain prices but I have no experience of these and after reading up on the net they don't get a good rap regarding reliability. If I'd have read about my old Scenic though I would have been put as well and that has been a great car!!!
So the question is.................
Which megane should I go for/avoid??????
