And therein lies the rub.

BL could and did produce good cars. Like em or not, cars like the Maestro and Montego where inherently decent designs. Certainly no worse then the Fords or Vauxhalls of the time.
But poor management, poor production control, bloody minded unions, blame it on what you want, they lost their good name. And it not only killed BL but left the poor memories that many of us obviously share.

When they released the SD1 there was a waiting list a mile long. Rover was the luxury executive saloon of choice. And salesmen laughed and said "Everyone wants one mate, you'll just have to wait"
So the punters looked elsewhere.. Then the build problems came to light. Poor electrics, bits falling of and way too early rust.
Rover went from top to bottom and BMW, who were no more then a exotic oddity in the UK, sky rocketed.

I like RW's idea BTW, points for old car spotting, photo evidence required

4 out of the 8 cars I've owned were ARG/BL models. First a Mini, then two Metros, followed by a 214. All of them were fine in terms of bodywork, mostly just the usual mechanical bits you expect. The second Metro only rusted from unrepaired vandalism (I couldn't afford the excess on the insurance claim). My 214Si was sound for bodywork, even underneath. Just under the bonnet was a problem , but that was down to the previous owner thrashing the out of the engine etc.

Just back from a big supermarket shopping trip and the oldest car I say today was a very shabby K reg (1993) Vauxhall Astra.

There is a rather football-supporter my-team's-better than-your-team rivalry in this thread.
How many points for spotting a Renault 18?
Or any pre-2000 Japanese car?
The point is that Maestro/Montego's, along with equally-rare-now Escorts, Cavaliers etc, were built in this country, and owning one should give a little bit of pride in having supported jobs in this country. Yes some of the cars were poorly built, and it does seem that the workers at BL felt the country owed them a living, but I think the fact that only 32.2% of Renault owners here would buy another, tells us that the Montego wasn't the last car with reliability issues.

We had a Maestro 1.6, and the biggest problem with it was when the timing belt broke (preventive maintenance? What's that?) but I just fitted another and that was that, no bent valves. Then had a diesel Montego, had over 150k on it when I killed it by running into a 6-inch flood at 50mph..

A long read here, but tells the sad story of an under-developed, but potentially great car:
