Steering wheel airbag

Hi all, I have a Lagune 1999 T reg which has done a high mileage and the steering wheel is worn and feels sticky. Apart from that its a lovely car and still going strong. Fortunately I have another similar car which is a non-runner so I thought about swapping the steering wheels.

The Haynes manual say the airbag has to be de-activated, I can do that ok but it also says it can only be re-activated by a Renault dealer. Is this true? or can I just fit it and connect it up and hope all is ok?

Has anyone done this before? Any help is welcome. Thanks for reading this.

As long as the ignition is off when you disconnect and re-connect the airbag,it should be fine.Make sure the airbags are the same too, obviously!

You can disconnect the battery as a further precaution, but I never bother......

Just my opinion, mind.Airbags are explosive devices and should be treated with extreme caution etc etc.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

You might want to practice fitting the wheel from the car you are using onto the non-runner, and connect up the battery - see how difficult it is, before risking any probs with the good car.

Since both steering wheels will be off in any case, it shouldn't add significantly to the repair time.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Thanks for all your comments. I wasn't sure if there is a reactivcation procedure for the airbags. I assume I just have to connect it up with the battery disconnected eh? Hopefully the ecu will 'see' the airbag connected and wont show any warning lights. The only concern I have is if it will actually work in the event of a collision.
Any more ideas on this you guys????
