A Monaco has lots of extras fitted from standard.

Beware of interior dampness, wet carpets signs of staining, Ensure that both keys are present and working, Cam belt changes are 72K or 5 years which ever is soonest, all electrics work as some simple parts can be very expensive to replace and are dealer supply only, if a diesel change oil / filters every 9K or 12 months which ever is soonest.

Interiors can be very tatty, some Scenics have had a hard life especially if more than 1 owner check that seats move and fold OK, All warning lights extinguish after start up, Avoid the 1.4, listen for clonks from suspension check tyres for undue wear patterns.

Lots out there but hard to find a good clean example.

Hi Boneman - you are doing the right thing by carrying out a bit of research before buying - nice to see someone thinking ahead - only one other piece of advice though - from personal experience I would be very, very reluctant to buy at auction as the auction is usually the last resort for people trying to sell their car who can't sell it otherwise.

I did a fair bit of research before plumping for the 2000 monaco 2.0. Must say glad I did. Drives well, and I'm finding it a lot more economical than expected, getting 30 + mpg around town, not bad for a big lump.
As mentioned, check all electrics, sunroofs for signs of leaks, rear seats remove ok, FSH, cam belt at 70k. Take for a test drive.
I saw a few and was a bit picky in terms of little scratches, seats etc. But it paid off, I saw one on e bay and messaged the owner, the sale ended with no bids, but he phoned and I picked it up for the reserve price, bargain as well.

I am driving a 2000 1.6 16v Scenic Sport Alize. This has all the bits I need, air con. The 1.9Dci would have been nice but they are like rocking horse s**t, hard to find a good one for reasonable price. Fuel is 32mpg around town and short trips, but has been up to 42mpg on a trip at 55mph. As has already been said avoid the 1.4 because you will be up and down the gearbox all the time it is REALLY underpowered. Hope all this helps. Oh, and avoid auctions, this is where my brother who is a Reanult dealer gets rid of the stuff he wouldn't or couldn't sell any where else.
