I reckon these are one of those "Why the **** do you need that" add ons.

I had them on my E Class Merc and they were a nightmare. Because it had auto wipers you didn't have the good old variable speed intermintant option. What that basically meant is that isf it was raining properly it was fine, if it was minor drizzle it was a pain in the backside.

I'm not being funny but how hard is it to flick the wipers on when you need them

I agree, but as it is a feature fitted to their cars owners expect them to work.
I am sure the auto lights feature is only really for the continent where it is illegal to drive thru tunnels without lights on - over here its just a feature that manufactures addd to cars to make them more "luxurious".

Of all the gimmicks/gadgets on our Laguna the auto dimming rear view mirror and the "auto re-circulation " facility to eliminate car fumes are both excellent features that work really well.

I have to agree with everything that I have read here that is bad about the ‘auto-wiper’ function from Renault.

On my previous car (Clio 1.6RXE) it had about five different intermittent setting that pretty much covered all rain conditions. I only ever once used ‘total flap’ mode when it hammered down one afternoon!

On my latest car (Scenic 1.9DCi 2005 model) I find I am playing with the settings trying to work out what mode to leave it in. I got really annoyed that with almost no rain it will send the wipers in to the fastest speed know to man – which is ridiculous! I have now reverted to using RainX and switching the system on to constant if the speed of the car gets too slow.

Incidentally I think that the system doesn’t arm itself incase the screen is covered with ice, and the wipers stuck firmly to the screen – hence blowing the fuse (that would be even more annoying than the high speed mode)

I am glad that it is not just me that find the system far from perfect – saved me time by trying to get the garage to look in to the matter when Renault clearly needs to re-engineer the system – my work mate says the BMW system that he has work with no problems.

I've had a Renault Clio 1.2 Dynamique in the past and have a Megane now. I've found that the best thing about the auto wipers is bragging to your mates that your cars got them but as soon as it starts raining they are useless. The Meganes are better than the Clio's but maybe Renault has just improved the software. (Clio was 02 reg Megane is 05). Spray from Motorway driving is the worst as the sensor just doesn't seem to pick it up.

They are no better on the Espace

I have an Espace IV and agree with everything said so far about the wipers. Mine are just the same in going bonkers when there is a light rain or not coming on at all etc.
Tell, you what is great though - the keyless ignition.
You have the card in your pocket and press the start button (which I wish was on the gear knob like on the E Class Merc) and you're off.
Same with the doors - don't need to lock or unlock them - brilliant!
Finally, the electric handbrake - flippin' marvellous! Love mine!
