Unhappy Clio2 Auto Overheating in slow traffic

After a holiday of two weeks before which there was no problem, the Clio 2 started to really heat up in slow traffic. Steam coming from under the bonnet etc but no sign of a leak. Let it cool down and topped up the water and all seemed fine for a few days until once again stuck in slow traffic and the water temperature guage once again began to climb. This time I wasw not in slow traffic for long and once I got going again the temperarure dropped back to normal. Does this sound like a thermostat problem or something else. Any advice would be great.
