8 valve or 16 valve

I have a 1997 2.0 Renault Laguna, hatchback. It needs a new exhaust but I just phoned someone and they asked me if it was an 8 or 16 valve. How do I know what it is?

Hi there pg, a couple of pics for you which may help. The one one the left is the Renault 8 valve which has no plastic cover and the older type coil system. The one on the right is the Renault 16 valve which has a plastic cover and a separate coil per plug. There is also a Volvo 16 valve that Renault used. this also has a plastic cover but the yellow oil filler cap is near the centre of the engine.
Regards Leroy
