collapsed Thermostat

My thermostat collapsed in to two halves and I lost my coolant. I cant understand how this stat housing holds together. Its on the 1.9TDI and its plastic. Have some clips come of it or something. I have never seen a housing like this before. and my manual does not show a housing like this. Any one help please
