Angry Howwwww Much?????

Developed a horrible rattle from the exhaust this morning on the VS so this afternoon took it to a national exhaust centre to see if somthing had come adrift etc.
Drives in and the guy said just what I was dreading "sounds like the cat"
Up on the ramps "yep your cat has gone and some of it has travelled to the back box.
Check the book, no VS listed, phoned the suppliers who said that they can't just supply the cat due to the design but have to supply the whole exhaust. How much?
1500.00 was the lowest price 1500.00
He said he will call me back on Monday when he can speak to some other suppliers but has anybody else heared of not being able to buy a catalytic converter and should it of gone in 3yrs and 2 mths?
What do you think?

I'm no expert but a CAT should last a few more than 3 years. the CAT on mine went recently - after 8 years. I'd be a little suspicious of the whole exhaust being needed, I thought they are all of a similar design and relatively easily replaced.

At £1500 I'd be tempted to pop into the dealers and see what they think.

My cat went earlier this year was 200 for a new one fitted, however have had problems with the exhaust ever since, it went in this morning to an exhaust centre and turned out it was the wrong cat , and needed 2 new boxes which they have welded onto the cat another 100, your price seems very excessive

Unfortunately your paying the price for having an unusual car.

It might be worth contacting an exhaust manufacturer such as Janspeed as they could probably make an exhaust with a cat in it for less than that!.I'd also try a dealer to see if either the cat is cheaper from them or wether Renault would make a contribution to a new one as the car is only just out of warranty.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

I've never heard of the catalyst not able to be supplied as a stand-alone item (I don't think it would be physically possible to manufacture an exhaust system with the cat in place).

I would definitely get more than one opinion before buying.

At that kind of money, you could get a custom system built in stainless steel, plus a replacement catalyst.

As your car is only 2 months outside the original warranty, I'd be inclined to contact RCS to see if a goodwill contribution could be applied.

My 12-year-old Scorpio has had 3 cats replaced during the 8 years I've owned it, and its still on the original exhaust system.

Keep us posted.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
