Clio 182 Engine Temperature Gauge Problem

I recently bought a Clio 182 and after about 3 weeks the engine temperature gauge started to go up and down when the car was warm. Strangely it returned to normal when I accelerated and dipped down to cold when I decellerated. When it was in the cold the car coughed and spluttered. So I took it to my local dealer (who have just become Renault dealers after Rover went bust!) and they fitted a new temperature gauge. For five days it worked perfectly, but now it's doing it again!!!

Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone shed any light? The dealer doesn't seem to know what's wrong, obviously doesn't happen to old mens' Rover 75's.

It wont be anything to do with the Gauge. The Coolant Temp sensor will be defective.. Common failure on the 182..

Symtoms include erratic temp gauge, & poor running, ie Stalling, high idle speed etc.
