renaults better build quality than ford? :)

When parked this evening(I had reversed into the space) and eating my after workout meal deal of egg salad sandwich, small tube of pringles and can of diet coke>

The car beside me ,my passenger side, red focus, new type reversed out .Its wing mirror n/s caught my wing mirror n/s.

It didnt sound like much,I spluttered my sandwich.looked to the left and no damage on mine, couldnt see a nick even when i got out.
The guys wing mirror looked like an exploded clock spring.
Maybe it was just a matter of pushing the bits back together ,but didnt look like it.

We had a small discussion .Since my mirror seems to be ok ,I wasnt worried about it.
The discussion went something along the lines of the scene towards the end of Le mans(movie) where porsche and ferrari drivers exchange hand signals and nods .
He drove off with dangly mirror and I finished my meal deal .
Course its possible his mirror was already damaged..but it sure looked like a toy that had lost all its stuffing.

Currently in coup's garage:
RM III coupe 1.5dci FVT,Audi TT Mk1 ,a bike and too much rubbish.

Maybe, I had an Escort from new (early 1990's) which was frequently back at the dealers to have a water leak into the boot space rectified.
Despite the efforts of the dealership the adjusted the tailgate to such extent the shut profile was an eighth of an inch lower than the rear wings, they applied a circle of sealant around the rear washer nozzle (it was leaking), that failed so sealant was put around the through-air vents in the wing sides, that failed also.
I found the leak after removing the rear interior, the water was coming into the car between the floor pan and wing where the car had never been welded/sealed on the production line. A few weeks later that car was traded for another marque.
So, maybe!

In my experience Ford plastics have been extremely brittle since the old sierra's
I can remember my dad had one of the mk1 Renault 5's and had a bumper-bashing with a Sierra, You couldnt even see a scratch on the renault but the sierra looked like a bomb exploded under the bumper most of it was lying on the ground in pieces, Renault 1- Ford 0

I haven't owned a ford since the old Cortina Mk2 and that was my last Ford..I have owned one old Capri and I mean the old one not the one you lot are thinking about [American rip off ]and I owned the classic similar to the Capri but the rear windscreen was cut back in rather than swept back.. I have had 2 other Cortina's both Mk1 one was a 1200cc and the other 1500 Gt and one Anglia 1200..all were pretty trouble free and robust in build.. I dont like the current crop of fords and think the Focus is gross and well over rated and over priced..

Re: renaults better build quality than ford? :)

I thought all modern cars were made to disintegrate on impact to improve safety/survival of the occupants by dissipating the energy of a collision. Could you suffer a severe headache if an intact Renault door mirror came flying through the side window (1lb lump of plastic/glass??) as opposed to a few shards of plastic/glass flying about the air? (high speed incident)
I know we are only talking about a 1mph car park situation here but the parameters have got to be set somewhere.

Don't take without giving in return
